How fast should your website load? How to measure it free in 2 minutes
· 6 min read · PX Digital Studio
When someone taps the link to your business, they decide within seconds whether to stay. If the page is slow, they don't wait: they go back to Google or WhatsApp and open someone else's. Speed isn't a technical detail; it's your business's first impression.
What the data says
According to a Google study with SOASTA (2017), when a mobile page goes from loading in 1 second to 3 seconds, the probability that the visitor leaves without doing anything rises 32%. At 5 seconds it rises 90%, and at 10 seconds, 123%.
In other words: every second of waiting costs you customers who were already interested, because they came looking for you.
The three numbers Google looks at
Google grades the experience of a page with three measurements called Core Web Vitals. These are the thresholds Google considers “good”:
| Metric | What it measures | Good |
|---|---|---|
| LCP | How long the main content takes to appear | 2.5 seconds or less |
| INP | How quickly the page responds when the customer taps | 200 milliseconds or less |
| CLS | Whether things “jump” while it loads | 0.1 or less |
How to measure your site, for free
- Open PageSpeed Insights, Google's official tool.
- Type your website address and tap “Analyze”.
- Choose the Mobile tab: it's where most of your customers are and where scoring is strictest.
- Look at the Performance score (0 to 100) and the LCP. Above 90 is excellent; below 50, your site is costing you sales.
Why most websites are slow
- Heavy templates that load features nobody uses.
- Unoptimized images, several megabytes each.
- Third-party plugins and scripts that pile up over the years.
- Servers far from your customers, without a network that serves the page from nearby.
What to do if your site is slow
If your site is small, optimizing images and removing what's unnecessary is sometimes enough. If it's built on an old template, rebuilding it is usually cheaper and faster. At PX Digital Studio every site is delivered measured with Google Lighthouse on mobile; our demo scores 96/100 for speed. You can estimate how many customers you may be losing with our calculator or request a website renewal.
