PDF catalog or web catalog: what changes when your customer buys from their phone
· 5 min read · PX Digital Studio
Most businesses that sell on WhatsApp keep their catalog as a PDF. They send it when someone asks “what do you carry?” and hope the customer opens it, finds what they want and writes back. That last step is where sales are lost.
What happens when your customer opens a PDF on their phone
- They have to download it. A catalog with photos weighs several megabytes. On mobile data or a weak signal, it's slow or won't open.
- They have to zoom. A PDF is designed for a printed page. On a six-inch screen, prices and sizes are read by pinching and dragging.
- They can't search. To find one product they have to flip through pages. Almost nobody uses text search in a phone's PDF viewer.
- They can't order from there. To ask for a quote they have to leave the PDF, go back to WhatsApp and type from memory which product they wanted.
- It gets outdated. Every price change means a new PDF, and customers keep the old one on their phone.
What a web catalog does
A web catalog is a page that opens from a link, with nothing to download, built for a phone screen.
- It opens instantly and reads without zooming.
- It has search and filters by category, size or material.
- Customers order from it: they select what they want, with quantities, and you receive a single WhatsApp message with the list and product codes.
- It's always up to date: when a price changes, everyone sees the new one at the same link, with nothing to resend.
- It shows up on Google if it's on your own domain and set up properly.
Quick comparison
| Web catalog | ||
|---|---|---|
| Opens on a phone | After downloading | From a link, instantly |
| Finding a product | Page by page | Search and filters |
| Ordering or quoting | Leave and write separately | One button, message ready |
| Changing a price | Redo and resend the PDF | Updates at the same link |
| Showing up on Google | Rarely | Yes, with your domain |
When does a PDF still make sense?
When it's going to be printed, when a tender requires a document, or as a downloadable spec sheet for a product. For selling on WhatsApp day to day, the link wins.
How to switch
You don't have to redo anything: the web catalog is built from the information in your current PDF. At PX Digital Studio we send you a working sample with your products before charging you; if you like it, you keep it. See the Base Plan or try the demo.
